Aerodrome NOTAMs are essential for Gliding
« on: 24-Dec-2006, 23:40:34 »
Hi John,

Merry Christmas!  Consulting the help text I am concerned about the following under "Filter Groups":
>Check the Aerodrome box if you want to include Aerodrome NOTAMs as
>well as En-route. By default, this box is unchecked for Gliding and
>checked for GA.

Before using Spine I used a similar program called NotamPlot.  On one occasion I unwittingly set a turning point within a Red Arrows restricted area because the area was based on an airfield and was only promulgated by an "Aerodrome NOTAM".  It was not promulgated by any "En-route NOTAMs".  So it seems to me that it is extremely unwise to filter out all the "Aerodrome NOTAMs".

Unless things have changed I believe you should change the default for Gliding so that "En-route NOTAMs" are included.

There was a long discussion in uk.rec.aviation.soaring some time ago about red arrows infringements. It turned out that some programs (can't remember if NotamPlot was included) did not pick up on the NOTAM, but Spine did.

I'd recommend you to do a search for "red arrows" in that group to read the discussion.

Including aerodrome NOTAMs is a huge processing overhead, plus you will have a vast number of extra entries to check through each time.

I'm not convinced that making this the default is a good idea, but if you feel safer including this option then please do so.

Perhaps posting your concerns to the newsgroup will elicit some different opinions.

Thanks for raising this matter.

By the way, I think you meant Aerodrome, rather than En route in your last sentence.

I did some investigation at the time.
Red arrows are both en-route and aerodrome notamed.
I think Notamplot discarded the en-route notams which were also aerodrome notams.
Spine got it right. Notamplot never sorted it out to my satisfaction.
I use Spine with Aerodrome turned off.
